Pueblo Chieftain: Fort Lyon help

Today, the Pueblo Chieftain editorial board called on Governor Hickenlooper to redouble his efforts to save Fort Lyon and the local economy.  Read the editorial here.

The planned closure of the Fort Lyon Correctional Facility in March is wiping out 204 jobs representing 10 percent of all jobs and 25 percent of all wages in the county. According to an analysis by the Bent County Development Foundation, a comparable loss statewide would cost Colorado 430,000 jobs and a whopping $20.8 billion in wages, nearly doubling the state's unemployment rate to 16.2 percent.

What do you think - are we making short term budget cuts that will cost much more over the long haul?
