Colorado WINS Members Celebrate Juneteenth

June 23, 2022

On Saturday, June 18th, state employees marched in the Juneteenth Music Festival and parade in honor of the newest state holiday, Juneteenth. Together in Five Points with the Black community who have been celebrating there for years without official recognition, we honored Black people’s unique contribution to justice in our society.

Last year we negotiated our historic, first contract agreement with the State of Colorado winning provisions for improved wages, scheduling, and paid time off – including a new holiday for state employees, Juneteenth.

We knew we needed an official state holiday on Juneteenth to celebrate Black people’s freedom and resistance, and center We know that when we all can celebrate our history, Black, white and brown, we are making the way for a Colorado that works for all of us.

This Legislative Session we helped the Black Democratic Legislative Caucus of Colorado pass this new holiday through the legislature. Watching this bill move forward was a great example of how when we work together at the state house and in our workplaces, we can win big for working people.

This year we were proud to celebrate as Juneteenth became our newest state holiday! Check out our photos and event photos from the Denver Post!
